The Blandy Group has been synonymous with high quality hotel development and management since the 1930’s.

Following the sale of Reid's Hotel to Orient Express Hotels in 1996, the group decided to incorporate its investments in the hotel industry in Madeira into PortoBay Hotels & Resorts which was formed in 2000 with the same founding Madeira partners who together had built The Cliff Bay.

Strategically it was also considered important at the time, to involve a major industry partner and control of PortoBay was therefore held by Blandy’s, Ocean Island Group and Thomas Cook, the large German Tour Operator. Thomas Cook has since sold its share holding in PortoBay to Blandy’s and Ocean Islands Group respectively.

The core of PortoBay Hotel and Resort’s portfolio was initially made up of four and five star hotels in Madeira. These are The Cliff Bay (five star), Porto Santa Maria Hotel (four star), Resort Vila Porto Mare – Eden Mar, Porto Mare & The Residence (four star) and PortoBay Serra Golf, totaling 1700 beds on Madeira. The group subsequently expanded and today has three hotels in Brazil, PortoBay Rio Internacional in Rio de Janeiro, L’Hotel PortoBay in São Paulo and a charming Brazilian Pousada in Búzios, PortoBay Búzios. PortoBay also expanded to the Algarve with the PortoBay Falésia and opened in Lisbon in April 2015 its newest 5 star property, the PortoBay Liberdade, just off the Avenida da Liberdade. In May 2016 the group opens its second hotel in Lisbon, the PortoBay Marquês. This four-star hotel, with 72 rooms, is located on Rua Duque de Palmela, right around the corner from Marquês de Pombal.

Guest satisfaction is reflected by the high occupation rates, often reaching between 95 and 100% and the success of the hotels is also shown by the numbers of guests who choose to return; to date over 30,000 repeater guests have been rewarded by a loyalty card.

In recent years, the relationship between hotels and real estate has changed significantly, primarily due to the introduction of timeshare. In response to market demand part of the Porto Mare Residence, situated in the Porto Mare complex has been sold as timeshare. This is a niche development with about half of the ninety apartments, sold as timeshare units.
